It’s not someone else’s job to guard our hearts. God’s Word says that we are to guard or “keep [our] heart[s] with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23
There isn’t just 1 spring, it’s not just to spring up a well within ourselves so we can have it for just us. The springs of life are to water the soils of the earth, they’re to bless others and to give away–our cup runneth over because there is more to give. Like the widow who needed to pay the debt (2 Kings 4:1-7), the oil is unending as long as there is another vessel to fill up. When we are about God’s business the well and vein never run dry.
We don’t guard our hearts just so we won’t get hurt by others, but we’re protecting the spring’s source. We can’t heal with spring water that has been poisoned by bitterness and rebellion and anger. And if our hearts are hardened then the waters can’t spring forth.
Give your heart to God so He can heal it, so you can fulfill your purpose in Him.
